I Never Assaulted My Employee- Chinese Investor
By Madube Pasi Siyauya

A Chinese national reported in Issue 85 of The LRF News as having assaulting his employee after he asked for his dues has refuted the allegation.
New Centaury Steel Zambia Limited Managing Director Li Min who spoke through his General Manager Stephen Nkhata said at no time did he or his men beat his former employee Davies Chanda. He said Chanda was employed by his company as a brick layer and he only worked for half a day.
He said when it was monthend, he went to the construction site with Nkhata to pay the workers in accordance with the pay slips they had. Min said after paying his workers Chanda enquired why he was not paid. According to the pay schedule Chanda had only worked for half a day. Min said there is a distance between the construction site and the factory and there are people responsible for supervising the construction he only went there to pay over 60 workers. So he was busy that day. He asked Chanda to go to the factory the following day.
Min said Chanda was not compromising so he decided to leave him. Chanda got upset and allegedly punched him on the face and got a screw driver which he tried to stab him with. At that point workers apprehended Chanda and tied him behind. They then called the Officer In Charge (OIC) at Zone 17 police post.Min said he had been working in Zambia for the past five years now and he can not abuse his workers. He said his aim was to help Zambians.
OIC at Zone 17 Catherine Katukula said she usually goes round places in her area to give them her phone number in case of anything. She said when she received the phone call from the construction site, she went there with one of the officers and instructed her officers to untie Chanda. She said she took Chanda to the police station and asked Min to follow them there. She said she took the statements and arrested Chanda for assault. She said she released Chanda on bond the following day.
Katukula said Chanda decided to report the assault case at a different police post. She said she sent her officer to Mumbwa Road Police post to collect Chanda for jumping bail not to represent the Chinese as alleged by Chanda.
Katukula said Min reported him self to Mumbwa Road police post and both dockets against Chanda and the Chinese nationals have been forwarded to Lusaka Central police for prosecution in court. She said as a public officer, she is there to serve the interests of everyone.

Inmate Re-arrested After State Enters Nolle Prosequi Twice
By Perpetual Sichikwenkwe in Mongu
A PRISONER at Mongu Central Prison who has been re-arrested after the state entered a nolle prosequi twice over his murder charge has appealed to the Legal Resources Foundation (LRF) to assist him so that he can appear before the court in August 2006.
Mabuku Matakala said he was appearing before the magistrate court and his case was closed on March 27, 2006 and does not know when he would appear before the high court.
Matakala complained to Mongu LRF Paralegal Joe Mulafulafu that he is a remandee facing a murder charge involving the death of Mola Silumesi in October 2003.
Matakala is alleged to have caused the death of Silumesi after he allegedly beat him with his hands on October 19 2003. He was arrested the same day and appeared before the court on November 1 2003.
On September 28, 2004, Matakala was committed to the High Court for trial and on October 6, 2004 he appeared before the High court.
On October 12, the state entered a nolle prosequi but he was re-arrested and remanded.
On November 3, 2004 he was picked up from Mongu Police Station and taken to Senanga Police Station where he was detained.
He stayed there until April 2005 when he was committed to the high court for the second time. He was still charged with murder.
In October 2005, a second nolle prosequi was entered again but he was re-arrested.
He started appearing before the magistrate court since then until the closure of his case on March 27 this year.
Mongu LRF supervising lawyer Paul Mulenga is studying the matter.
