Our Chief is Evicting Us

Dear Editor,

SOME traditional rules around Zambia are too cruel and tribalistic and so are most people. Most Zambians in rural areas stay temporally because of fear of being evicted from their homes. In addition, they find it difficult to upgrade their surroundings.

Government should immediately come in strongly to help people who are evicted from their homes especially in chief Chipepo’s area where this kind of practice is being displayed.

Life in Chief Chipepo’s area is quite a very tough and complicated. This is in the central part of Zambia. Sometimes it reaches the extent of people saying human rights are just being talked on political lines.

The fact is that Elliot Musondela and his wife died some years ago and left children, 3 boys and 4 girls. This person was from southern province and came here in Kabwe rural chief Chipepo in 1997. All his children were born here. What a surprise, to see that these children were being evicted from their home because their parents are dead, by a village headman, who said he would replace the family with not a Tonga anymore.

Just imagine, Sir, law and justice are in his house, but he is their promoting tribalism. There seems to be double standards of laws in Zambia, which separate governance of Zambian people staying in rural areas and urban.

There seems to be a set of standards, I have observed, that are separate laws which some traditional rulers follow when dealing with people who ask for a place to stay and are not from their tribe. This kind of behaviour, the government should look out for and it should not be tolerated, because some of these traditional rules are looking very corrupt and too tribalistic.

The Zambian government should not forget there is a small insect biting people, that is poverty, which sends poor Zambians to death. We are Zambians and entitled to stay anywhere in Zambia.

I feel there is need for LRF Legal advice Newsletters to be sent to traditional rulers so they can be sensitized about Human rights. Most people fear being evicted.

Yours faithfully, C.H. M. Kabwe Rural.

No More Chiluba

Dear Editor

I WOULD like to give my opinion on the people calling for (President) Chiluba to stand for a third term.

Editors, I think these people are people who have benefited from Chiluba being president. These people know that when Chiluba is no longer in power, their political careers will perish. They are even buying off poverty stricken party cadres who are making noise in the streets calling for the third term. The poor cadres do not know what they are doing They just chant slogans so that Sata can buy Chibuku for them. It is not fair for selfish people to want to perpetuate their luxurious lives at the expense of other citizens.

(President) Chiluba will loose his integrity if he listens to such calls. It is not fair for any one to change the constitution to suit other people. Surely, Zambia can do better than having Chiluba for 27 years like it happened to (former president Kenneth) Kaunda Kaunda. If Chiluba stands, what makes us sure that he will not want to stand for a fourth term?

Mr. President, we appreciate what you have done for us. We have had enough of you. Any thing more than what we have already had will be poison, so please retire, I beg you.

Concerned Zambian, Rhoda Kasweka, Lusaka.

Supply Mumbwa With LRF News

Dear Editor

WHEN I was in Kafue I used to read your newsletter very much since it contains vital information about legal rights of every Zambian citizen. These articles are very much educative in everyday life.

Now, what surprised me is that here in Mumbwa, this newsletter is not there and people have no knowledge of it.

Please note that this place has a lot of commercial farms, nurses, civil servants and many more that need your newsletter, but are not aware of it.

Please can you bring it here by distributing through my address. We don’t want to remain in the dark. The copy I come with here interests many people who are the originators of this request, that is why I decided to request your office to reach this place.

Francis Moola, Mumbwa police station.

...We Also Need LRF News

Dear Editor

WE send you warm greetings in the name of our lord Jesus Christ. We are a newly formed group of Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace. Among the books given to us by the facilitator was a copy of Legal Resources Foundation News Letter. We have seen it to be very educative and really a good lead. Our request is that you send us ten copies every month. Your consideration will highly be appreciated.

Yours faithfully, Charlie Njeleti , Kabwe.
