Don't Act Emotionally Police Told
By Madube Pasi Siyauya
Police officers in Livingstone have been urged to act professionally and not to be emotional when dealing with suspects.
Legal Resources Foundation (LRF) Legal Advice Center paralegal Ernest Mukelabai said police should lead as examples of human rights activists instead of being abusers by torturing people as it costs government a lot of money in paying compensations.
Mukelebai was reacting to a matter in which a female police constable from Livingstone's Maramba Community Police post beat up a security guard who castigated her for not following a queue to see the dentist at Maramba clinic.
The Guard, Felix Muchimba told Mukelabai that on January 6, 2004 he was in a queue to see the dentist, when the named woman Constable who was off duty came with out joining the queue and went straight to the dentist's office.
This angered the patients who had been waiting for a long time.
They decided to wait for her to come out and was immediately approached by Muchima who followed her and asked her why she did not follow the queue, the woman instead proceeded.
After some time the woman went back to the clinic with another named police officer who was in uniform who dragged Muchimba to the police post.
The nurses and patients who had seen what had transpired rescued Muchima from the two officers.
Mukelebai said while at the police station, Muchimba was beaten up and sustained chest pains.
He reported the matter to Libuyu police Station where the officer in charge is dealing with the matter.
