Chibolya Police Detain The Wrong Banda
By Monica Kunda
Chibolya police officers searched a man's house without a warrant and arrested him for bearing the same surname as a suspect.
This happened on July 16, 2002 when some police officers went to Banda's house and ordered him to sit down. The officers started searching Banda's house without a warrant. When they finished searching, they told Banda that he was keeping a man who was suspected to have been involved in a crime.
Banda denied keeping any criminal but the officers said they went to his house because the suspect was called Banda as well.
Despite Banda explaining that he was not related to the suspect, the officers arrested, tortured and detained him for six days.
He was later released without proper explanation.
He was subsequently advised by his friends to lodge a complaint at Kanyama legal advise centre which he did on August 22 this year.
The matter is being pursued.
