The
LRF Newsletter, a publication of the Foundation launched in 1998, continues
to be the most effective mouthpiece of the Foundation, revealing the services
being provided, exposing human rights abuses and police corruption and giving
coverage to cases being handled by the Chambers. The readership is given tips
on the laws and the texture of the human rights fabric in Zambia. The LRF
believes that human rights abuses should not only be fought in court but also
through the empowerment of the citizenry with information on how to assert
their rights.
The
circulation of the LRF Newsletter has grown even wider, standing at 6000,
although demand is far greater. It is also available online at the LRF
website http://www.lrf.org.zm. The publication is much sought after and its
copies run out within a day of publication. The incidents it documents or
reports on have been cited in other Human Rights reports and publications
mostly by International organisations such as Human Rights Watch and Amnesty
International who enjoy a good working relationship with the Foundation. Both
local and International media frequently consult the Foundation on legal
issues concerning Zambia.
An
extremely important function of the Newsletter is to inform the people about
human rights violations. Those that cannot reach the offices of the LRF are
afforded an opportunity to share their legal problems by writing to the legal
adviser column. This column is designed to respond to legal queries and
provide legal answers and advice to readers. The newsletter editions are also
loaded on the Website for electronic transmission to our worldwide browsers;
the Foundation has been receiving legal queries on the position of the Law in
Zambia by international legal researchers.
The
current staff manning the Newsletter publication section include an Editor,
who is part-time and four full time journalists, plus two other part timers a
Graphics designer and a cartoonist.
